What is the Turing Scheme?

The Turing Scheme is the UK’s global program to study and work abroad. Named after the mathematician Alan Turing, it aims to provide funding for international opportunities in education and training across the world.

See below for a concise overview.

Key Features of the Turing Scheme:

  1. Purpose:
    • To provide opportunities for UK students to gain international experience.
    • To enhance global employability by exposing students to different cultures and work environments.
  2. Funding:
    • Covers expenses such as travel, living costs, and, in some cases, additional costs for students with special needs.
    • Grants are available for short-term and long-term placements, from a few weeks to a full academic year, our average mobility is 3-6 months in duration.
  3. Objectives:
    • To help students develop critical skills, enhance language abilities, and foster independence.
    • To build networks and enhance collaboration between UK institutions and international partners.

Benefits:

  • For Students:
    • Personal and professional growth.
    • Increased cultural awareness and adaptability.
    • Enhanced career prospects with global experience.
  • For Institutions:
    • Strengthened international partnerships.
    • Broader curriculum offerings.
    • Opportunities for staff development and collaboration.

The Turing Scheme represents the UK’s commitment to international education and collaboration, providing valuable opportunities for students to gain global experience and skills crucial for their future careers. Interested students should engage with their educational institutions to explore available opportunities under this scheme.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible for Rinovas Turing programme you need to be studying or have recently studied on one of our accredited courses. However, we have a range of courses and there are options to suit most learners – please speak to one of our advisors if you are interested in applying for these limited spaces.

Turing targets a broad range of learners, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds and there are ways in which we are able to support participants who have additional needs.

Where can I go and who chooses where my mobility will be?

The scheme is not limited to European countries and encourages students to explore opportunities worldwide. There are two routes to finding a suitable host:

  • Existing Host Organisations: Rinova already has connections with many exciting, supportive host organisations wanting to offer opportunities to UK participants. In these cases you will be encouraged to apply and may audition along with other participants for a mobility that is being offered at a specific location and on a specific date.
  • Find your own host: It may be that you have identified an organisation or company you particularly want to work with and have made the first steps in contacting them. If this is the case, we are very happy to follow up this lead with you. We will provide the information you need to progress the conversation, so long as your contact meets all the necessary eligibility and suitability criteria ( they need to be a company and not just an individual and they need to be able to ensure that your placement will be of educational value in a safe and appropriate environment. The final say will be down to our funders, but we will work with you to try and take this forward.

What do I do next?

  • Institutions, rather than individual students, apply for funding on behalf of their students – so this is something we can discuss with you. Rinova has an allocation of mobilities it can arrange in any given year.
  • Interested students should contact Rinova to find out how to participate, go to our contact us page for more details.
